just about anyone that regularly uses Letterboxd likely says that the app helps them find movies and encourages them to watch more movies as a result of the (largely completely non-toxic) community in the app.

it's an app for film discovery and engaging with others' tastes. of course you're going to become more interested in the artform if you have a non-toxic space for curation and exploration.

not for reviews

Letterboxd has a blog/article space where they post op-eds written by professional journos and i've heard from multiple people (but this is unconfirmed of course) that they are much friendlier to people writing those articles as a result of not having studio oversight/interference.

A studio owning the app would greatly change this, let alone it greatly changing the way the actual functionality of the app works.

I am being for real. When the news broke about the app getting bought people are upset because the app is incredibly functional, consumer friendly, and people are able to use the app in the ways they want. It's why all the replies on other social media spaces or even in this thread about it getting ruined.

I've used the app for years and have never had drama on Letterboxd lmfao.

I have no idea what kind of spaces you're in where you view the "log your favorite movie app" is some kind of toxic online space, but maybe that says more about your online activity than anything else.

it can be non-toxic if you just ignore the reviews/comments (which is what i've done right from the start)

when i first created an account, i found a lot of lists that contained films that were considered "essential" or were completely unknown/underappreciated, and im grateful for that since it introduced a lot of films that i love and hold special meaning to me

I dont use it extensively or at all to log anything. People on twitter mention it or all parts of any form of social interaction isnt some magical non toxic spot. People argue over "why did you give that a 4 why is that in your top 4". A corporation buying it wont change they will still be able to do the same s*** they were doing before. They just view it as non independent and non hipster now. It will still function similarily

What about that will change by some corporation buying it out besides people feeling they have sold out ?

That isnt what I am saying. I judge art all the time on here. I dont aim for one liners to go viral or give movies scores out of 10. I say and discuss my thoughts. The arguing of scores and all that bullshit doesnt involve me

probably not but I saved myself from watching some horse s*** by cross referencing IMDb & perusing certain films lb page

I dont think a company owning lettterboxd will be a major change to the functionality that many already use it for
