They did however I always point to this song as definitely an influence and probably the first true metal riff (on an otherwise psychedelic mastapiece)

im sorry chief but even though this is a god tier song it does not strike me as metal whatsoever

only link is surf -> psychedelia -> proto metal -> metal but its really not that close in sound for me

i get your point on this one but still dont feel like its quite a full on metal riff harder edge psychedelic and more metallic than 99% of the time yes . same thing as the heavy riff part of Defecting Grey

even something like first few seconds of this i have hard time saying that about

but the convo of "first metal"/dividing line between proto metal/hard rock and full metal gets kinda lame after a point for me. made even worse by the changed definition of metal over the years. like if we were in 1976 then we would be calling more stuff metal

still feel like everything before Black Sabbath s/t could also be found on just some hard/psych rock song within elements of those genres but the black sabbath s/t song riff is first one where there is absolutely no argument against it being metal
