its a remote server u can purchase space on (or the whole thing in some cases) and you can basically do whatever you want with it, including downloading/seeding torrents, running plex server to stream content anywhere, etc. its like AWS but for normal ppl instead of companies

u dont need it per se. just keeps the illegal s*** 1 degree of separation from ur network (ISPs generally dont check or care about things you download, they do check what you upload though, and if you're torrenting you're uploading a lot most likely)
