If someone comes to you right now with the cure to cancer. You decide not to check any of their sources. Not follow up. You give them the keys to the city. You make them a billionaire. In 2012 mind you the internet fully exist and ways to check all that information. Yes some of that is on her BUT SOME OF THAT IS ON THE COMPANIES THAT CHOOSE TO BELIEVE A RANDOM WHITE WOMAN COLLEGE DROP OUT . I am not going to act like she is the greatest villain and manipulator of all time put to film just because Walgreens and everyone who cosigned her are absolute dumbasses who didnt care until investigative journalism stepped up.

They should have CARED to know that the results were accurate for the PATIENTS. Not just for financial gain but for a product they were putting out in their stores.

I think this documentary again would have added a lot more to it if the patients she affected could confront her as in talk to her in person or Nathan read their thoughts or feelings towards the case. They are who I want to hear from. Not investors. Not chronically online people who hate her. Not even Nathan Fielder. The direct people she affected.

Honestly I don’t even think it harmed anyone majorly. It told a woman she had HIV which is really f***ed, but like it didn’t harm them outside of misdiagnosis.

I agree, it’s totally insane from all sides. I mean 800 employees were working there at one time. I kind of wonder if they could’ve kept the company going if they said “we have a device that can do 3 tests and we’ll keep adding tests over time” instead of “we have a device that can test everything”

The whole thing still blows my mind

we didnt see so much of the footage that was filmed . Lets assume on average they filmed 3-4 hours of content a day for 34 days thats about 136 hours of content

we saw 3 hours. Unless you are saying a lot of that time they werent filming in the 34 days . The decision of what to use in a 3 hour film what to not use. When to film when to not film. The cut of what was cut. To not make it a mini series. A24 wanting it to make certain returns in a very limited screening that many will watch over cam. All plays into the documentary. This isnt like an investigative journalist documentary. Its a fun one filled with laughs and reflections of who can you believe is telling the truth or not telling the truth.

But again I think if people take away from this is the same thoughts they had when walking in then its less informational documentary and more preaching to the choir, comfort food or grab the pitchforks to sassy tweet online

Nathan fielder isn’t an investigative journalist though. He made a nathan fielder documentary

so if in your opinion it didnt harm anyone majorly and defrauded investors and she lost all that money is now very much in debt. What do we gain from a a documentary that makes many just hate on her more before she serves 11 years in prison? Mind you Diddy got 4 years and 2 months.

I feel its a bit sick for it to make the prison system a joke and people like "yeah she dserved it she is evil and truly harmed people" then you ask them how and they are like "well she defrauded investors and lied" when again many cant tell you the indian man name , billy or how we got here. Elizabeth Holmes was the face of it.

Also this style of doc plays into manipulation part. Nathan’s work has been about if he’s a bad guy because he manipulates people and exposes them. So should we trust her? She would we trust Nathan? Should we trust the New York Times? Should we trust the HBO drama series?

and I am asking you what did the documentary accomplish for you ? Did it show you everything? Does it feel like its not widely manipulated to construct a narrative and make profit and win awards?

We already know we shouldnt trust people going into the movie though. My issue is many that we see online are widely trusting Amanda , Lance and Nathan even though the movie is very much

TRUST NO ONE question sources ask them to cite information or be willing to confront them

otherwise you give them a chance to lie to you

    no.

I think that’s the point. She texted him “you can see everything” but we clearly can’t. Even if we saw all of the footage. Or if we knew everyone’s side.

I think there’s no piece of media or journalism that’s 100% objective. Were always being manipulated somehow

I agree with you but do you think many of the online reaction and reviews grasp this point?

No, but I’ve also seen a side online that’s defending Billy.

This movie is interesting and frustrating and pointless all at the same time

I mean I cant review the discourse when reviewing the movie so i focus on the movie itself more than the discourse of "greatest movie ever deserves best picture it changed my life". Its more difficult to review a documentary in the sense that all documentaries have value even if they have a level of framing and message they are going for. The best ones are at least honest in their creation and their deconstruction of our reality.

I made anti Trump videos in 2015 by editing and clipping his speeches

I remember when making those I would think “I could edit these to make him not look bad”

Everything is clipped, quoted, edited in a way with an agenda. People see what they want to see

again I focus on the movie more than the reaction to it . However its impossible to not also recognize the reaction itself could be made a document of our modern reality.

  • They filmed 16 hours a day and we got this

  • Didn’t have time to watch this past weekend, but I’m absolutely going next weekend. I already know Nathan made something special, he can’t miss
