Im one of the fans who doesn't like his pop lane. You wanna know why? The reason I am disappointed by his pop tracks is because over 90% of them have little to absolutely no replay value on the long term. While on the rare occasions where he hit the formula right, I've praised him. I understand how maybe he thinks that if he "continued to give us what we fell in love with" (the mixtapes kind of music), he might be labeled a one trick pony. For all I care, he can do a hard rock/metal track like MJ's "Give In to Me", bottom line is, I don't give a f*** what genre he follows. But in only one condition: make it a gorgeous track. A track/LP which still holds its replay value 6 or 10 years after release.
The reason you'll see me complaining is because I care, and I know he's able for so much more than what he half-assed in over 90% of the songs he dropped post KL.
Although as a fan I would love to have an album which is a level higher than the mixtapes (impossible how it may seem, cause they're so good, but it's to be expected, as an artist's career progresses one should expect more evolved sound from Abel, but anyways), an album to give Frank's cO and Blonde and Frank himself a run for his money. A concept album -- but aside from my selfish wishes, I would be super happy, ecstatic to have a pop album like MJ's Thriller, or say, a more recent example, Bruno's 24K Magic. Bruno and MJ aimed to make the most concert-friendly, feel good sounding project possible.
You won't see me complain, oh I won't say a damn thing if he dropped a 9-12 tracks LP, no more than 40min length, no filler all killer project filled with sunny tracks.
But to this day, almost 10 years in his career, a solid pop project which ticks the boxes above, is yet to come.
Mixtapes/KL Abel is the only Abel I recognize/approve of, and Abel is undoubtledly one of my most absolute favourite musicians. I do love his music, and I keep the mixtapes and his debut (plus some tracks here there and everywhere) in constant rotation.
However, I don't hold my breath anymore for Abel's releases haha. For some of the reasons aforementioned, plus these past two years I've been expanding my music horizons. There's just so much good music out there. Abel gave me 4 fantastic albums, it's kinda sad to see him achieve his prime so early in his career, then fall (when it should be the other way around). But hey. Being under a label and having targets to achieve isn't a very comfortable situation to be in, and you have little to no input.
The only thing that I wish for is Abel going independent and to have full creative control, to drop whatever track he wants, whenever he wants. Only then I will truly recognize him on par with the hungry for greatness, super talented 21 year old whom in the first year of his career, dropped 27 of the most unique tracks of our era.
