I do think the jokes really come from the futility of it all. They got stuck in a part of the ocean that is almost inaccessible and we knew exactly when they would run out of oxygen but couldn't do anything about it. There is a sorrowness that accompanies the hopeless and humor helps eliviate that to a degree, hell humor is the primary way of tramau bonding, especially on the internet.
