so if you diss some cac's dead mom they should call you the n-word right, I just wanna make sure we're being consistent in our logic here
Yep. But more than that
there’s this sad commonality that #thiskind of rap attracts a certain demographic that views this kind of rap above regular rap like it is just artistically superior automatically (which is not always true, there is some sample rap niggas that bore me, MIKE is just that good of an artist. Anyone itt new to that check out Tony Seltzer produced Pinball)
Even if the content is black coded there’s this “well this is REAL rap to me not like those hoodrat fellows that talk about d**** and violence that make me nervous and cross the street” which is hilarious because a lot of the artists in this box of music…love that music. Not just out of “I need to fit in” but…they just love that music. Earl had a yeat song on an ig post (referring to that style of music)
But as always, the niggas that really related to the artists music and really felt the weight of weight of the world and really had they eyes water to suffocate get priced out and all that’s left is this bastion of neurodivergent white people that were children of the NCLB generation so they only interaction is via the internet.
It’s quite sad and it gotta feel disillusioning for the black artist in particular performing (e.g. MIKE used to when coming up tell the white fans to move towards the back when he was performing. It’s hard to do that in Europe obviously)
S*** really sucks. And MIKE is right, cant stop a show but you can still be annoyed.
Growing up as a white passing hispanic guy in black spaces, there was a level of respect that I understood around that fact that inherently I was a guest if (HUGE if) invited to engage with black art and culture and a voyeur at best if not. I would be lying if I said I didn’t remember this exact dynamic playing out 10 or so years ago, seeing Ka or Pro Era or DJ Rashad shows where a black artist was baring their soul to a crowd of largely white faces and the unspoken knowledge that none of them would ever have to grapple with what that artist was grappling with if they didn’t have to. It was hard to see back then and even harder to see now knowing just how much potential for understanding these kids have at their fingertips if they’d just take a second to listen.
Now, on the one hand, no one was f***ing playing chess or whatever other TikTok bullshit at those shows. But those same people would have a friend who rapped the n word with no shame, or would turn around and happily go see Riff Raff the next week, or talk about how Prof was their favorite rapper with no cognitive dissonance. It’s a direct personification of privilege and distancing oneself from the history behind an art form that has always existed and only seems to be getting more obfuscated as we (to your point) disassociate the value of art from the value of the artist, particularly for marginalized artistic communities who arguably built the bedrock of all modern music.
Idk - I just resonated with your post and agreed, it’s really sad and MIKE couldn’t have handled it any better. It shouldn’t be on the artist anyway, and these kids are more than capable of knowing better.
