No big producers. No major co-signs. No group or affiliation. No gimmicks.

Just straight great raps, storytelling, bars and overall great music touching on various subjects from the POV of a Black man in America. After listening to his most recent A Murder of Crows, I’m starting to understand that he’s purposefully not collaborating with big names to keep his integrity as one of the best; with or without the help.

While other Chicago rappers like Chance, Vic, Keef, Noname, Saba, Smino, have grown their fanbase and fame, there are a lot of people that have not even heard of Mick Jenkins. But he can rap with the best of them, from Kendrick to Common.

If you disagree, just take the time to listen to his discography and these projects specifically from most recent:

Mick Jenkins - A Murder of Crows
    Mick Jenkins - The Patience
Mick Jenkins - Elephant in the Room
Mick Jenkins - Pieces of a Man
Mick Jenkins - Or More… The Frustration
Mick Jenkins - Or More… The Anxious
    Mick Jenkins - The Waters
Mick Jenkins - Trees & Truth

He’s super consistent and doesn’t rely on gimmicks, def one of my fav rappers of the modern era… but… i feel like calling him the single most underrated MC in the history of hiphop is def a reach and stretching it.

As solid as his work is, he does lack some cultural impact or a definitive classic imo (although in the mixtape space you could argue The Water(s) is)

And sure, that loops back to him being underrated as to why, but still. There’s severely underrated rappers that did have that influence, cultural impact and a stamped classic project.

Love his work tho and i rate his skills as an MC so i’m still glad to see people making threads on him

Mick has really taken it to the next level with his tone since The Patience too he's much more aggressive

He’s always had this agressive edge to his verses if you go through his catalog again, i guess it was just more spaced out with the vibey tracks, and his recent one really locked in on the rapping rapping fr

What other mainstream rapper out there has dropped at least 8 strong projects without a co-sign from peers, producers, OGs, labels, media nor the internet?

its cuz hes basically the modern version of those 2000s backpack rappers like murs where their appeal is how well they rap not necessarily their sonics and sound standing out hes too traditional for a lot of ppl's ears and it just comes off boring or stock if ur not into rap skill like that

In his interview with @YoungNastyShawty he talks about perfecting his tone, it’s a good watch if you haven’t seen it

Folks say this but are huge Lupe fans. It doesn’t really make sense to me.

lupe is quite interesting sonically for most of his career and has like very clear presence and s*** he be rapping over all types of wild s*** and + he came up in a dif era. lupe i skinda known for being a unique ass weirdo and has multiple classics under his belt a lot of his music can be enjoyed as sonically interesting unique songs not to say mick doesnt have that but its def not a priority he does kinda blend in sonically

ehh kinda seeing your point and kinda dont

mick's got so much substance and unique vision that calling him a backpack rapper is dismissive

yeah he's a rapper's rapper at this point with the aggressive jazz rap lane he's in right now but that just underlines his underrated status

I loved the waters but since then he's been hit or miss for me mostly cause of the production. Beats don't be bad but a lot of em just be sounding generic and plain. Idk how else to describe it but I run into that same issue with a lot of Lupe, JID/Dreamville, Saba, IDK stuff too

mick jenkins makes music that literally feels tailor made for the "mick jenkins is the most underrated rapper in hip hop history" crowd so he's doing fine in his lane lol he's just not a mainstream guy

he hasn't done anything truly groundbreaking to warrant that title

Honestly can’t remember the last time I spun The Waters. Never thought that project was that good to the point where it overshadows everything Mick has done over the past 10 years.

    Drink more water.
    Drink more water.
    Drink more water.

    We get it Brodie

Mick has made multiple better projects. But I guess I get it if it’s your favorite

Im reading this discography down and it just rings home the fact one day we GOTTA have a conversation about how J Cole really might just be the luckiest rapper of all time.

(And ive had this thought since before “the apology” happened)

Cause this is a pretty good discography dawg

The healing component one of the most overhated projects of last decade man lol.

Yeah yeah yeah nigga them skits was a lil too much and hearing your sis talking but how love love love love love love love makes the world go around was overkill but there been way worse albums than that joint that came out.

Drowning one of the greatest songs of the century man.

1000 Xans, Spread Love, Communicate, Daniel’s Bloom, Plugged? There are great songs on that album yo.
