Paris: "The Michael film panders to a very specific section of my dad's fandom that still lives in a fantasy, It's fantasy land - it's not real. But it's sold to you as real ... the narrative is being controlled, and there's a lot of inaccuracy, and there's a lot of just full-blown lies."

Janet: "She had something negative about almost every scene," an individual present at the screening told the outlet in March. "The acting, the makeup, how the actors spoke, even how they walked. It was Janet deciding against the room that this movie wasn't going to meet her approval." (this is just a report. She hasnt publicly said this her self. However, she has showed up to no events for the movie with the rest of the family).

i trust them to be honest tbh, most of these biopics are just fluffed up pieces to make money over everything else

That’s what I really wanted from it ngl. I kind of got disappointed when I heard it was a puff piece cause Michael is so much more than that imo

It's definitely not a puff piece. MJ comes across as very very different and isolated. The reviews would have you think they've turned him into average Joe the singer lol.

Can't wait to see what people get up to lol

It's going crazy internationally - I think it's the biggest English spoken film in India ever (surpassing Barbie) and Brazil have nearly sold out of most screenings from what I saw. Those videos from Paris... Just wild to see the reach

    Ok so.. lots to unpack.

The movie is a LOT more upsetting than I thought. For a crowd pleaser it gets pretty dark at times. It's damn near a tragedy. Which is a good thing in a way because Michael went through hell. Especially during this time in his life.

Colman, Jaafar and Juliano are all fantastic in their performances. I loved Juliano and he had my heart with him the whole time.

Overall it's pretty faithful. I do wish they went into more detail but it packs a lot in and never slows down.

It's really heartbreaking to see what he went through again and especially so visually. Some of the shots are great.

Some of it is a bit meh though. There were a few scenes in the Jaafar crossover I wasn't 100% sure on and you can tell certain things were leading to what was cut.

It wasn't the greatest movie of all time but it humanised Michael in a great way, and maybe that's why it got so many upset.

I'm going again this afternoon but my initial reaction would be a 7/10. It covers a lot, I just wish it went into more detail sometimes.

    "His story continues"...

Depending how Pt 2 goes maybe it can get bumped to an 8

    or go lower

You don't know what you're talking about. They legally couldn't mention the 1993 allegation, hence the reshoots. The Estate had to come out of pocket 100% to finance it. They had went pretty deep into the Chandlers and the overall situation.

I'm trying to give this as much grace as possible, but this is the most convenient scenario for the estate (John Branca) to have fallen into. He always seems to find himself in these scenarios.

Attorneys for a multi-billion dollar estate didn't do elementary due diligence when approving a script to a $150M film? They magically realized right as principal photography was closing that much of the footage was legally unusable? This is incomprehensible. Their literal job is running his estate and they aren't aware of clauses he signed?

Now they get to say "Oh we shot it and dove deeply into the case but we can't ever show you sorry!"

Financing reshoots is nothing. It gave them a large stake in the film and helped them shape the narrative. Big mistake seemingly turned out to be a big win

I personally think the 'We shot the scenes covering that stuff. but realized legally we couldn't do it" is bs. It doesn't make much sense when you consider the movie was in development hell for ages, and the Estate was heavily involved from the get go. Plus they likely would have framed it as "he's completely innocent and everyone is liars" and not much nuance.

But anyway, i feel like they probably shot scenes about it. Then later went "whoops. We didnt realize we couldnt do that" and reshot it so they can say "sorry guys. we tried. But legally we couldn't do it". Costed them a little money, but probably worth it to them in the long run.

You said nothing but a ton of conspiracy. There were rumblings and rumors about the reshoots for months before it bubbled to the surface. The movie got delayed an entire year because of it. It was rumored that the movie might've been in trouble as a whole.

From the estate's perspective, it's very easy to tell the 93 accusation story's truth and how cut and dry it was as an extortion attempt. The Chandler family was an absolute mess, particularly the father, and i'm sure the estate wanted nothing more than to finally expose the truths behind what actually went down. From the father trying to shake down Michael for film financing before going public with the lies, to the actual truth about the settlement that people still to this day have no idea about. They just think Michael settled out of guilt. They had all of the incentive in the world to have the 93 accusation in this first film and it's clear they shot a bunch of Dangerous era footage that had to get scrapped. They literally released a promo photo of Jafaar in full-on Dangerous era costume as the first look at the film, and it's nowhere in this first film.
