I mean it depends.

A bad director can turn a good/great script into a bad movie.

But a good director can’t turn a s***ty script into a good movie.

So in this case we really don’t know.

But one thing I do know is, David Ayer wrote a mid script, in which Antoine directed and it only became great because of Denzel’s excellent acting and improvisation that improved the mid dialogue that Ayer wrote.

As a director, part of your job is having an eye for a good script. Directors are able to look things in the script that don't work, and request rewrites until things are working for them. It's the same thing with every other job in the movie.

A ton of the best directors of all time consistently have movies with good scripts because they have an eye for a good script. Spielberg borderline never writes his movies. It stands to reason a Director who consistently has mediocre scripts in their filmography probably just doesn't have an eye for good scripts.

Never made anything Oscar worthy imo no. But he's definitely made some entertaining movies. And if I remember correctly isn't that wtf a movie is supposed to do? Entertain? I mean damn lol

I mean, the same exact thing happens in reverse too. There are movies with great scripts, concepts, that are ruined by bad directors. The director takes the blunt of criticism because its the most important job of a movie.

And doesnt ypu last statement support what the previous guy said. That this is a corporate made film, and they chose a director that just does the job he’s given? Better directors tend to not take on films they won’t have full creative control with.

That movie is the worst thing to happen to David Ayer cus now we gotta endure this man write Hispanic gangbangers for the entire foreseeable future
