The jury instructions for assault contain the phrase "Someone commits an act willfully when he or she does it willingly or on purpose. It is not required that he or she intend to break the law, hurt someone else, or gain any advantage." That's the only place I can find the phrase "on purpose" in the penal code or the jury instructions related to these three charges.
