Calling it now, the spell did not fail because of spidey, the spell failed because Loki opened up the multiverse. That spell was probably only supposed to work on the sacred timeline, trying to revert a single event in a single time, not across multiple, infinite universes. Steve not knowing about this event, or possibly happening at or around the same time, really messed up how the spell works.

That's why the band is circular above Strange when he attempts, it looks like Kang's perfect timeline loop, the spell just wasn't designed for this and instead of resetting that one timeline, it merged some of them together possibly because of how Spidey felt with trying to live multiple lives.

To add, my guess is that this won't just explore this mashed universe but will also explore why it happened and strange might find out during the movie, with the help of Peter (hopefully we see his intellect while trying to find a way home) and they figure out that they're stuck in the multiverse, strange finding out that it is indeed real now and potentially leaving spider-man in that universe at the end of the movie to go find help, Wanda, in MoM. Hence the name No Way Home and Multiverse of Madness.

Ezra Miller's Flash partially walks through and reveals to Strange that Jane is the key and he was right about Thor. This will lead into Love And Thunder where they battle it out for half a minute then they team up against The Destroyer (back from the first movie mixed with Enchantress blood) it's going to be epic
