Had a rewatch of No Way Home and something crazy dawned on me: Dafoe’s Goblin in both NWH and Spider-Man is the only version of the character with strong pathology. He operates off the belief that he is a god and that people with gifts should enforce their godly nature on inferior beings. Real Old Testament God type of fella

While the comics Norman/Goblin are two great characters (they are two different characters) with their share of iconic stories and being highly effective villains, they ring a bit hallow underneath being so entertaining. And it’s because of this lack of pathology. Honestly, what is comics Norman/Goblin typically about philosophically besides being crazy? What is his core belief that drives his actions?

Might be a big reason why the public doesn’t identify with Goblin as strongly as The Joker and why Dafoe’s depiction is the only version of the character that legit goes down in pop culture history
