mentioned this movie to 3 different people at my job and none of them heard of it, marketing really is catered to u specifically
I mentioned it to my cousin and sister during Christmas they had no f***ing clue about this movie. I had to send a trailer
Like this a lot but the end does feel anticlimactic, what was the whole thing for?

I remember like well over a month ago i countered my own critique of the early marketing campaign by saying maybe reinforcing the cinephiles, Timmy's base, social media, etc.. was the way to go for this. It seems like that's exactly what happened
There were some survey results from like Cinemascore that said 50% of the sample said they came for Chalamet.
This isn't a general audience spectacle but absolutely rallied the base it needed to hopefully stretch good legs over the next few weeks and gain more casuals.

I feel you could ask “what was the whole thing for” for Safdie’s other films as well. Their films are mainly character studies that take place in intense and fast paced environments .
They arent really focused on giving a clear resolution or story payoff
The focus is always on the pure tension and chaos of the world, and how the main character navigates through those moments . And also to show just how far these characters will go to accomplish something that probably is just fueled by ego and a false sense of self fulfillment
What type of Scorsese flick can you picture?
And what type of PTA flick
I’d love to see Timmy in a Wolf of Wall Street type film directed by Scorcese. Would give him a chance to just go all out and flex his charisma and intensity . But tbh I think it would be even more compelling if Timmy acted in a slower paced Scorsese film like Killers or Silence. It would be dope to see him give a layered and nuanced performance like Leo did in Killers
For a PTA film, I would want to see him in a The Master type film, where he acts opposite of a legend like Daniel Day Lewis or DiCaprio . Would be a perfect way for them to pass a torch to Timmy
Also I know Benny has been getting some hate lately because most believe his film was a lot worse than Marty, and people are thinking that Josh is the one that carried them throughout their career.
But bruh still co-wrote The Curse so I know he has the potential to make something great

The curse was great, i have to rewatch

Feel like people are being a bit rash here. Benny's never directed a solo film and threw himself into writing, directing and editing alone which is a lot to juggle. And still he left with accolades.
Marty isn't Josh's debut solo, and he has the exact same co-collaborators as previous Safdie films. He's bombed before and knew how to improve. Bronstein as co-writer and editor is also more crucial than people give credit for. He's co-written everything with Josh since Daddy Longlegs.
Also think a lot of it was that the literal story of Smashing Machine and Kerr wasn't all that interesting. Might have benefited from dramatizing further in the way Josh did Marty Reisman.

Fair point, gotta rewatch but this holds very true when I compare it to his previous films
whole score gives me goosebumps but man Holocaust Honey is so chilling, feels like the most important scene in the movie the longer i think about it

I agree, coming from someone who really enjoyed the smashing machine.
It’s just that Benny pen isn’t as sharp. A lot didn’t realize Josh and Ronald is the true writers of the trio. And I believe more so Ronald is the most skilled.
Not to say Benny isn’t skilled as a writer, it’s just not his strong suit. He’s better at directing, whereas Ronald doesn’t direct he writes and edits.

Life. LIFEEEE.

This this this. People are slowly starting to realize how big of a factor Ronald is to the feel of a Safdie film.
And I get it the films get marketed as “The Safdie brothers” cus usually the director(s) is who you look at. But it starts with the screenplay, every time.
You can’t turn a wack script into a great movie. And not to say the Smashing machine script was wack but like you said Benny held back from dramatizing Kerrs life like Josh did with Marty. To the point Marty Supreme isn’t even a true story or biopic.
ALSO Smashing Machine wasn’t Bennys idea. The Rock brought it to him saying he wanted to do a film on Kerr. So he could’ve been restricted too unlike Josh who is the one who said he wanted to do a movie on Marty.
Better than OBAA and better performance than Leo gave. I see a Marty sweep.
I’m just spitting facts
Marty Supreme film of the year
Timmy getting his Oscar too
“go see it on the big screen, dont save this watch for a couch and phone distractions, go outside.“
Tyler really doing his “PLAY THIS LOUD, GO OUTSIDE” shtick for a movie
