What I thought was really moving about Marty as a character was that he was doing all this for his own internal validation. It don't matter if nobody gives a s\*\*\* about his sport. If everyone is rooting against him. If he doesn't enter the real tournament. He knows he's great. That's why he did it. It's his act of devotion. Between him and God. And once he wins he hugs Endo and cries and you almost get the sense that there's really a nice guy repressed inside Marty that isn't there because he's shut it out. And, there's also the sense that all this has been a distraction from real life. And deep down he's scared and vulnerable because real life terrifies him.
