I often forget Mata's still in our team tbf. That said, he was great in our 2 league cup games. And he is suited to games like this where Newcastle are set in so deep. Thats why picking James is so puzzling.

? not even close. he was excellent start of season last year. that alone is already enough to never be considered a real flop. wasn't even an expensive signing.

Rather have just played VDB. Yeah he's a more suited to playing central, but its not like we particularly use the width of the pitch too much anyway.
James is just ineffectual in games like this. We dont get enough counter attacks and he's not good/clever enough in possession.

btw...shelvey idk why but I cant quit him. always thought he had the makings of a top class player, but never worked out. hes probably the 1 guy ive just never given up on like 10 years later now

Yeah has his quality moments for sure. Had a great career tbf, even if not a top top career. Definitely had some discipline problems back in the day though.

Why don’t we start with vdb instead of James is the thing I wonder. VDB or Mata out of position is 10x more valuable than James who can’t score and can’t assist.

If we had made some more signings I think we could’ve really challenged for the title this year. Arsenal, Chelsea, City and Liverpool all underperforming.
