He's at his best at the centre of the field mainly because of his passing and forward defending, similar to Blind (passing not that good though). Set him up with a cb who's actual capable of defending and he'll be allright.

Or let some player with actual height defend tall players at set pieces. The criticism on him hasn’t been justified because he’s actually been decent in open play.
