What the hell are you talking about, musical biopics aren't even the most successful biopics. The 3rd most successful musical biopic ever was outperformed by s*** like Oppenheimer, The Revenant, American Sniper. Not animated, not part of a franchise

I don't know how much explanation you need, but I'll keep going. You're hitting upon a different thing. There's a huge gulf between high budget and low budget movies. Most people refer to this as the death of the mid budget feature. Pretty much the only small movies that make big bucks are horror movies.

Those movies turning those profits in the climate which I've laid out prior: post COVID theatrical releases of movies that aren't franchise, aren't animated. That's a win. Whitney Houston? That was a COVID surge release that then went to Netflix and went #1 there. Whatever that means. Amy Winehouse? That was Focus Feature's third biggest bet of the year behind Nosferatu and Conclave. Where does that confidence come from?

I'd say Prince for the whole decade too.... his prime ended around 96/97 but I don't think the acclaim dropped until around the mid 2000s
