I read this line in two ways. One: the lies told by those in power who control the discourse around culture and contort stories from the ‘ghetto’ to perpetuate racist narratives. Thus, affecting Lupe’s mental state. Two: similar tropes that Kendrick talks about on TPAB. The whole survivors guilt thing and almost feeing indoctrinated by the ‘hood’. So, even as he moves away from his roots due to his success, the culture and hardships that shaped him in his formative years still keep him locked there mentally, thus “colonizing his mind”. Could even be both of those things at the same time keeping him down and causing bouts of malaise.
