I was thinking the same actually, probably one of the more surreal moments that I wasn’t able to put more thought into later and piece together. I guess one interpretation is that Eugene’s hesitance to fully put himself into their relationship left their love wavering like the paper. A love story unable to be written. I like how it almost looks like a seance, ties to how the ending devolves into the mysticism of telepathy.

It felt really slow at the start and felt sort of sudden for sure

The events that happen you know were going to happen from the start in some shape or form so i was just kind of waiting for it and it didnt feel out of nowhere for me

I think the switch itself could have been done better, but it doesnt detract from my overall enjoyment or takeaways from the film
