my ex and I went on three dates before we both said that we didn't want to see or date anyone else.

we then exclusively dated each other for like 3-4 more weeks until I asked her to be my girlfriend. so I feel like I kind of get what exclusive means.

those first three dates we could've and would've been well in our right to date other people during that time. I just told her one day after our third date that I didn't want to and wasn't actively seeing anyone else.

I don't know how other people do it. but I do see a reason for exclusively dating without the boyfriend/girlfriend title. it's a short time period usually but it does exist.
