Lakers GM Rob Pelinka and head coach Darvin Ham will speak to the media ahead of Media Day (Oct. 2) on Sept. 28 (Today) at 2 p.m. to talk about the upcoming season.

Rob Pelinka says Rui Hachimura arriving in LA was a “personal renaissance” for Hachimura, who’s been working closely with and learning from LeBron.

“I think he’s just hitting the takeoff of the flight he’s about to go on,” Pelinka said.

“Bron calls him his understudy,” Darvin Ham said.

Darvin Ham says D’Angelo Russell is the Lakers’ starting point guard.

Rob Pelinka says Austin Reaves’ development since the trade deadline isn’t a surprise to the Lakers and he has the “Mamba gene” with his work ethic.

Pelinka: “I think we’re very intentional about the versatility (and depth) this roster has. There are upgrades of spacing and shooting top to bottom; that was all done knowing LeBron is going into the 21st year; we have to partner with him to help him get all the way to the end."

Rob Pelinka says AD spent a lot of time with Chris Jent this off-season. Chris Jent is Lakers shooting coach.

Darvin Ham says that the team's top-to-bottom depth will allow the Lakers coaching staff to manage LeBron James' minutes not only game-to-game, but month to month, looking for spots in the schedule to grant James a reprieve in Year 21. Ham joked LeBron should be "grandfathered in," to make him immune to the league's new rest guidelines and penalties

Darvin Ham on Anthony Davis: “He’s only 30 years old … I’m totally excited about him and this summer I personally witnessed him getting into the gym (a ton). It’s been great to see. And as soon as he walks in to the room, you can tell (the work he’s put in)."

Rob Pelinka says that he spoke to Christian Wood's agent on a nearly daily basis for several months while pursuing Wood as a free agent this summer.

Pelinka also says that Wood chose the Lakers over offers from other contenders and cited the way Malik Monk and Dennis Schroder came to the Lakers on bargain contracts in recent seasons and used their time with the franchise to drive up their value and re-establish their footing in the league.

Ham said he has a strong relationship with Wood, and told Wood that "it's time for you to show that the stats you put up can impact wins at the highest level." He added that Wood's Lakers teammates have fully embraced him to get the most out of him.
