Hi neon
Hi mr atlanta
you mustn’t have listened to solar power either
I’m afraid I did
and I enjoyed it
not playing any snippets. when she builds the hype for that first single and i press play the night it drops...history begins again
i still remember exactly where i was for my first solar power listen
imo those two albums she dropped excuses any subsequent weak releases, esp melodrama which i would argue is a generational pop classic
solar power definitely was lacking production wise and was lacking in strong vocal melodies compared to her previous work, however it still featured some gorgeous writing, and pretty strong cuts here and there (Man With The Axe, Dominos, Hold No Grudge, Stoned At The Nail Salon)
i feel like if she had went all the way towards that psych sound she was talking about for this album instead of getting scared off after having a bad trip, the album would’ve been worlds better, i still was largely satisfied w it though, but im a stan so eh
im also a stan
more of pure heroine guy than melodrama ngl for me that album is Kanye esque in that way it turns a ton of different more niche influences into this generational pop album that can connect so deeply to its audience
both are incredible tho and 100% agree that it gives her a pass - ill be listening to everything she ever puts out just off how strong those two albums are
but my issue more w that album is that it hurt her potential to be this generational artist like a Kanye or Frank who just seems to have this innate ability where making music like that is easy
agree on the psych angle I think antonoff while talented is also not conducive to maximizing her talent because a large part of her talent is her ear and thats gonna be maximized by working w different producers and bringing different sounds together instead of committing to a sonic direction w one guy
there's some good stuff on there but I think it made me think that while she's one of the best songwriters out - she's not Frank level to where she can construct unbelievable music on these fairly minimal fairly drumless canvases like he did on blonde
hmmm i'll say this
my favorite ella song of all time is buzzcut season and partially being is for the dancehall/island influences within the production (never hear anyone talk about this btw). that being said i'd be in for her incorporating those kind of sounds more prominently throughout a record because i believe she'd be able to do it tastefully.
also, the lyrics in which she was referring to ecstasy give me the vibes of something like a magnets which is super underrated and i'd also love for her to do stuff in that realm as well.
i'll never not check for lorde because of the headspace she's consumed in terms of my music listening since the first time i ever heard royals (🤢). however, i do think one can be weary of her after solar power... even if some of y'all wanna say that album is underrated or whatever it's still seen in the eyes of most as a gigantic step down from her previous work.

Agree w all of this
Buzzcut season is a 10/10 song definitely top 3 lorde for me and maybe even 1
I think she can do it well too but I hope she take a less obvious route than just straight reggaeton rhythms bc that just feels like a label decision
Also I’m just desperate for artists that are willing to make dance music to make some in different sub genres (house, dnb, garage particularly)
Would love more disclosure collabs

yeah it definitely does cut into her mythos unfortunately, again, i would’ve loved to had heard the OG album lmao—and yeah Antonoff gotta go man
he’s been pretty steadily ruining Lana’s post-NFR output as well afaic, idk what it is that he’s exactly doing but it seems like he’s largely responsible for the hyper-minimalistic approaches that both Lana/Lorde have gotten criticism for
also very good observation that she’s way better at capitalizing off of multiple approaches to music versus locking in with one dude
didnt even think of it that way
and yeah Frank Ocean is definitely a special breed in the sense that he doesn’t really need a bunch of crazy production to make extremely touching and moving music to an extent, i kind of feel like Lorde sorta touched that ground a little bit on PH with songs like Ribs and/or maybe A World Alone (?) but she definitely is at her best when she’s on that electro-pop s***
we’ll see what she does this next cycle
lorde dropping pure heroine at 16 is f***ing ludicrous though lmao, literally insane man
the writing is so mature for her age it’s crazy, olivia is a pretty solid writer but even she has her moments where her stuff is a little too angsty or teenager-y, lorde didn’t deal with any of that s***
let alone the album itself has a coherent identity versus SOUR containing some blatant song rip-offs (although i think they’re pretty damned good regardless)

mythos a great way to put it thats exactly what im getting at
yea I think that its a disservice when you have that kind of ear/voice/songwriting talent to not branch out on the collaborator side
agree Lorde def has her moments of getting close to that level but even those songs have a level of action on the production side above the majority of solar power that lifts them to a different level
ya im excited she's still a special artist and im always gonna be checking

yep its absolutely mental
Olivia is a great example bc she is an incredible songwriter too but her output even two years more mature than Lorde was is not really comparable aside from moments
The latter one is much more melodrama like but less angsty and less raw/smoother
Drums remind me of loveless
She's going to do it again isn't she ?
Wait a second
WE ARE BACK
