I'm sure the album is solid and people are overreacting but competing with melo and ph is almost an impossible task. From the singles it seems clear that she isn't making the usual boundary pushing music we're used to from her.

“when you strip them (lorde/marina) down of hooks and interesting production choices you realize they are not strong lyricists to pull off the sparse singer-songwriter thing. i know there's beef between bases, but Lana and Taylor were the most successful in moving from pop to this type of production, but they always had that guitar music backbone to their music. it's never outright bad when alt-pop girls try, just lacking the power of their more well honed productions. they should keep it to a minimum and explore other productions because they pull that off much better and its a huge talent in itself to have a sense of the production we saw for The Family Jewels and Melodrama, for example. Leave the guitars and pianos to the indie girls like Cat Power, Bat for Lashes and Joanna Newsom
