Fine, cristal too… But so what? It’s part of a greater cultural landscape which promotes vulgarity and extravaganza… Which isn’t specific to hip hop at all. I mentioned early 2000 reality TV, remember Paris Hilton? That’s the kind of lifestyle she’d promote. Lorde probably grew up feeling a dissonance between these simulacrum and her own life (which was apparently quite privileged but not that rich either).

I really fail to see how this can be racist because it’s not related to black people themselves, it’s a sign among others which became apart of aesthetic codes in some music videos. What I’m saying is, black peuple aren’t inherently tied to these signs.

Just because the things aren’t inherently tied to a race doesn’t mean they can’t be use in a questionable/insensitive/racist way

I feel like Olivia's gonna push stuff in a fuller direction, was so pleasantly surprised at how heavy and thick the mix on Brutal was, there's only so many snaps and ASMR vocals I can take before I'm gagging for pop to actually sound powerful again

But is it really insensitive or questionable? Don’t you think a lot of poor/middle class black people are (or were at some point) tired with all this display of wealth which clearly doesn’t represent their lives? Personally I know I’ve already felt that with French rappers of North African descent (I’m also French of North African descent). And it’s not a race thing, it really has to do with class. Sometimes, I think there’s something inherently insulting about displaying signs of wealth like that. And sometimes, I enjoy listening to Rick Ross.

I don’t really get why it matters
Lorde doesn’t make hits like that

A song like solar power is so far off what the top 10 sounds like it’s crazy

The track sounds like you’re floating in a dream! The lyrics suggest something more disturbing though. Upon reading it, California seems like it’s about the moment she found out her life would be changed forever, when she finally got signed.

The opening verse is her boss telling her he’s arranged for all the of new luxuries, the expensive hotels & jets. She’s going to be in the sky “in a whole new way”.

The nostalgic, innocent vibe of the track is her remembering the carefree times of her youth, she doesn’t want that “California Love” that the industry provides to celebrities. The last line of the track is her literally wanting to wake up from her dream world.

” I wanna wake up, I wanna wake up”

Just my takeaway on first glance. I can’t wait to see the other themes she explores on the album.

    Yea i agree

I think it’s a reflection on fame and how hard it was being signed so young and growing up in that world
And how it’s a world that people look upon so favorably even though that’s false - I feel like the idea of “California love” is directly fame itself and pop culture relevancy not actual emotional love
And then the whole “it’s all a dream” outro is like telling people it’s not all it’s cracked out to be

But I think at the same time she saying she’d do it again regardless

It’s a really well written song tbh there’s a lot to unpack
I honestly think it’s one of her best - it’s just that a lot of her other great songs have especially crazy/unique production and this really doesn’t

But yea incredibly excited about the album - I read some of the lyrics that leaked for the path and it definitely seems like the album is gonna cover a lot of ground
