I do think covid and the economy helped but also keep in mind that although we didn't have nationwide riots, we did have nationwide (peaceful) protests throughout the last decade before covid. It part of the reason "SJW" became a popular insult.

I think when you have a movement that makes ppl feel they are apart of something bigger than themselves they will embrace it.
