People have now outgrown that teenage angst and all that’s left is annoying skibidibidibidibida rapsNothing wrong with teenage angst in music. Even though I'd argue it's a bit more than this.
However, I think you might have a point here. He has simply outgrown this and has since then been struggling to find an authentic lane in which he can express himself. There's a reason why he raps less about certain topics and has become extraordinarily corny.

WESLEYS THEORYOveremphasis on lyricism, sacrificing pretty much every other aspect of the music for the words he rapping. The acrobatics were cool in 2009, but they got old and now its more impressive when he puts together a song with real heart and character, rather than some shallow display of technicality. He has a few songs here and there that hit, but the truth is as good of a rapper as he is, he's not a very good artist anymore. And the music definitely doesn't resonate with people the way it did from 1999-2013.

GoostinFor me, the biggest issue with Em's post 2003 music is too much randomness and experimentation, all without any kind of self-awareness to identify what suits him and what sounds awkward.
TSSLP-TES, Em sounds so authentic with his delivery. But after 8 Mile, he started experimenting with weird voices and accents. After dropping the accent, he developed an obsession with rapping as fast as possible and rhyming as many words as possible, even if the lyrics were pure gibberish, not to mention he started catering to the pop crowd, the same crowd he would've mocked in 2002.
Em's lyrics use to have clever humor, heart, and thoughtful commentary even if it was edgy, but now he only raps to show off his technical skills, which are often presented with a choppy and robotic flow that doesn't fit the beat. A lot of people complain about the corny punchlines and I can't fault them for that, but I'm not trying to bash Em here or sound like a hater. I could look past a few corny lines here and there if the rest of the song was listenable.
Used to be the biggest Em stan back in the day, even bought a copy of Infinite off of Ebay in addition to all of his unreleased mixtapes. Would love to see Em get back into form one day, but this would require a huge change in direction that he doesn't seem to have an interest in. Oh well, he still gave us so many gems in his prime so I'll always have love for Em regardless .

some hardcore Em fans love him so much they don't even notice or pay attention to s*** like this when they listen to his current music lol. They think it's the same Eminem from back in the day and think people are tripping when they criticize him.

Hit the nail on the head. I would love to hear old school Em on a trap beat. Even Relapse Em. I loved him so much back in the day, these days I just keep wondering "bruh.. What are you doing?", it's sad to see. I did like that Venom track though, that's the only recent thing he's released which I f***ed with.

Good post. I agree with all of it. I wanted to blame the d**** but I could see flashes of old em on relapse. His obsession with rhyming at the cost of quality content is his ultimate downfall. He still has the skill but doesn't utilize it effectively anymore. If you listen to a song and the bars are good the flow is wack, if he has a nice flow, the lyrics are meaningless and the bars mean nothing because he just rhyming to rhyme without saying s***.
I think em just can't get back to that point without the anger and the focus on the things that truly matter to him. He's most likely cut off his personal life from the music

Mar 16, 2022For me, the MMLP2 was the album that phased me out of his career. Recovery at least had decent subject matter at times and he was on beat. But the awkward choppy flows where he was cramming way too many syllables into bars, the excessive acrobatic rhyming, and the bad Rick Rubin country/60s rock beats really put me off from his music at that point. Also, this was the start where the hooks got really unbearable.
Bad Guy ended up being the only song from that album that was great

Submitting production to an Eminem album must feel, for a producer, something like a novelist feeding their manuscript into a wood chipper. On the one hand, you are guaranteed unprecedented exposure, and on the other, you are all but ensuring that no one will notice a note of your work.

I think he is one of the top 5 rappers alive in terms of skill and even now his technical proficiency in his more recent albums is still astounding (ie. Godzilla).The problem is his new albums get critically panned, they don't sell nearly as much as they used to and his ability to move the needle in todays rap landscape leaves something to be desired, Super Bowl nostalgia aside. Now I can't say I have listened to all of his post-2010 work religiously but I have heard enough to consider that he still has the sauce.

He fell off, but he’s climbed back. Revival was horrible. Kamikaze was good. Music to be murdered by was better. He’s found his groove again and is putting out music for his fans. It’s not for everyone. It’s obviously not classic. But its good music for his fans.
