@op you put me on to something great today I love you for that brother I thoroughly enjoyed this. I need to give his discography a proper listen. Sometimes it feels daunting due to so much material but wow this was fantastic

I'm glad, n my ma is a gigantic Prince stan too

    And I def feel you

Imo his albums Controversy (the album right before 1999) all the way to Love Symbol (the album right after Diamonds and Pearls) is the most definitive slice - which is 11 albums if you haven't heard literally anything including his biggest 3 of 1999, Purple Rain & Sign O the Times

He was dropping an album every year almost all the time, and this is just talking about his main discog lmfao. This ain't even talm bout all his side projects with groups n bands and where he literally pretends to be someone else to prove he can pop off as a "nobody" without his name attached (which he did succeed at ๐Ÿ’€) nor is it talking about all his post death, anniversary albums tracks additions, remixes and songs + some WHOLE PROJECTS from the VAULT that are officially released and unofficially leaked

My lightskin twin I may just have to check out that stretch. As an anime head I know how to skip over the non cannon stuff but who knows maybe one day weโ€™ll just dive fully in

That stretch of albums is only from 1980 to 1994 too and already bigger than most discogs and most of this was also him at his mainstream peak too ๐Ÿ’€ ๐Ÿ’€

And same lmao, I'm a big anime fan too and I usually have to cut ish up into my own part music and anime to parse it when I'm jumping in blind - I had to it for Stevie Wonders discog and I still haven't heard everything ๐Ÿ˜ญ

He self produced and self played almost everything and the few things he would have other people do like Jimmy Jam or one of his bands he would still conceptualizes, executive, finalize and orchestrate it

An insane person - and yet still one of the most successful people, became MJs rival, and has one of the biggest #1 songs ever period with Doves Cry - every album for the longest he would basically switch off every year between one being really "artsy" and the other being for the "mainstream", but still held to his principals and artistic vision and all of it

Major major inspo for my own music and how I basically do everything myself too from mixing/mastering to writing to production (with no samples or pre-made loops) and singing - and very important to my household growing up

    Definitely

Iirc it was his last major mainstream success album in 91 but wasn't reviewed as well and it isn't talked about much outside of Cream

It's an overlooked album in his discog that was part of his biggest era

id say its been getting some reassessments and better retrospective reviews

imo for real lesser known gems from 90s Prince id say Chaos and Disorder and maybe even Come

You could pick any of his 90s albums tbh, DnP and Love Symbol was like the last hurrahs of his major stardom

But yeah, I have a strong attachment to DnP plus it not being as mentioned or as well known although still part of his major era it made it a perfect match, DnP is in my own top 5 Prince albums

Picked a name randomly out of a hat

At least he got the bug now! And some cool points for picking a deep cut as his first
