An incredible in-depth look into what it takes to run a restaurant, especially one that is as highly-revered and respected as the Troisgros restaurant, run by Michel Troisgrois and his two sons (all of whom are featured quite prominently throughout the doc). It opens up with the lead chefs shopping for fresh produce at a local market and culminates with the chefs having friendly chats with customers, all the while we see them prepping and cooking the meals, working on recipes and the menu, and having to meet with local vendors that provide them with beef, wine, and all sorts of cheeses. It might not look like there is a lot of food being presented at the table but there surely is a ton of hard work and dedication going on behind the scenes to get the food on to the plate. The phrase “if you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life” is scoffed at by most people these days (and rightfully so), but it seems like an appropriate phrase here to describe the passion that Michel and sons seem to have for their work.

I will also say that this seems to be a counterweight to most of the cooking shows out there that seem to emphasize mayhem in the kitchen (cough*Hell’s Kitchen*cough), by showcasing cooking scenes with a sereneness to it. Even when the inexperienced chefs make a mistake, the head chefs don’t yell and berate them but instead take the time to show them what they did wrong.

Truly a lovely film to witness, and what a film to have as your last one. RIP Frederick Wiseman, we miss you.

I am Not a Witch (2017)

The debut film by Zambian director Rungano Nyoni, who, alongside Robert Eggers, has quickly become one of my favorite working directors. This here is a masterpiece. A shortcut review is: if you loved A Portrait of a Lady on Fire, you'll find something to savor here: Lingering wide shots that never feel like there is negative space, an orchestral soundtrack, and overall a quiet nature to the film, which contrasts with its vicious themes of chauvinism/slavery/servitude in the name of tradition, turned up to an uncomfortable notch. The film also features a stunning, powerful final shot to wrap things up.

Shula (played by Maggie Mulubwa) is a girl accused of being a witch, and as such, has to either choose to be a goat, or join a coven of witches, who are essentially pariahs in this backdrop of Zambia, destined for unpaid hard labor, and tethered to ribbons they aren't allowed to break. The film is so dense that I can already tell I need to watch it again, and I won't spoil what happens next for the young girl, but I give this my highest recommendation.

It was borderline 4 stars by the time we got to the final stretch but overall 3 and half seems right. It's a good watch. I'm a sucker for films that bookend themselves, you'll know what I mean if you're lost. Some pretty funny moments too, but it's also heavy/depressing. Everybody brings their A-game so you won't even notice that this is basically a play with 4 people. Script keeps things moving, and Olivia Wilde directed the s*** out of this.

Better than Season 2, not quite as good as Season 1. Would rather see more of AKOTSK than more of this right now

Preparing myself for Mike Leigh's (possibly) final film premiering next month at TIFF by going through his films that I haven't seen yet.
