You mention fictional but then talk about him being seen differently in the 90s, an opinion based on a hypothetical, which in essence is based in fiction
Itâs the age old argument to make the past seem superior and itâs only based on Nostagia
Old NBA players do it all the time until they realize that when youâre dealing with the best in the world it wouldnât matter.
Lebron would adapt to that era. MJ would adapt to this era.

this is about looking at his modern catalog and rapping with a 90s framework. Dont get too involved in the details. its not about the past in general kendrick is chilling in the 2000s. yall making me sound like i hate the man lol

@CliCity
That's the issue with your premise bro and its a conversation lol so im not taking it as personal as you mighht think.
It's flawed though because Prime hov wasnt 90s Hov, it was 2000s Hov and 90s Hov did totally fine in that era dropping just ok albums. He had one great album in the 90s.
Hov thinks MCHG is his 4th best album. (Every Kendrick album is better than that album. So the person you are claiming that Kendrick would look different against thinks an album that most ppl deem just ok to be his 4th best and that's above the output that you said that Kendrick couldn't stand next too. He thinks its better than every album he made in the 90s except Resonable Doubt.

i still feel like what ur saying got nothing to do with the point. i agree on the hov point it just doesnt matter. all im saying is if you put kendrick albums next to albums released in 90s they look a whole lot less important. regardless of what living 90s rappers might tell you in the modern day

Thatâs not true. Hov ranked MCHG at 6, not 4 and he had Vol 2 above it.
It's not a completely different world. He is from the west coast. Snoop existed in that era and did just fine, so did dre and Cube and a slew of other non NY artist. Mase existed in the era as well.
You're also forgetting that you are a product of the time you grew up. Kendrick would've been just as good or better than he is at rapping because his IQ would be been raised.
And Kendricks competition isn't just those guys you mentioned. He is literally still competing with Jay Z, Nas, Lupe, Griselda, Freddie Gibbs, Ransom, Black Thought
We can't ignore the fact that Kendrick isn't a gangsta rapper though. He from the hood but if we put him in that era he wouldn't be as big because it wouldn't just be strictly about the rapping. He'd probably be in the same lane as the pharcyde, de la soul, del the funky homosapien, the hieroglyphics, souls of mischief, etc and NOT with snoop, dre, and cube and them

This conversation is pointless imo. The mistake that you make is that you are taking his current personality and placing it to a very different era. You can't predict how he would have evolved if he was born 20-years earlier. You judge by how he evolved in the circumstances and environment that we know, he is the result but even a slight change in the environment can affect your way of growth. We will never know.

He later changed his ranking. Which is my point. He doesn't hold his other 90s album in the same regard as his 3 classics which lends to my point that Kendrick albums would hold up cause those albums aren't cemented

Nas wasn't big in 94 lol. Hov wasnt big in 96. Neither was outkast when theh kust dropped. Most of them hit max popularity in the 2000s. They made what is arguably their best work when they weren't popular.
Which lends to my point. Being bigger or.not wouldn't matter because the quality of Kendricks work would've stood up to that time

If you read the article he said âit can fight for 4thâ and then placed it fifth behind Vol 2.
He considers Vol 2 a classic
Yâall know better than to put hope in anything that doesnât have an official release date stated by the artist

I'm just going off of what we have today. There def were people making that type of music back then so it's more logical to put him there for the sake of this conversation. People in here assume and speculate all the time about release dates, his status with TDE, etc when in reality none of us know s*** and won't know s*** until it happens. I don't think this convo is any different than that

Youâre missing the point. He didnât rank it above his other classics and even gave it thought. Which proves that he doesnât hold them in the same regard
You also said he ranked it 6th which he didnât.

His original rank was 6th. Then he said âit could compete for 4thâ then he ranked it 5th.
Everything I said was true.
Like brother Ali said, if kendrick was to compete in the 90s he would be seen as Jesus. This would be the first time a hip hop artist was truly this great at making music, at being an artist.

Y'all need to cut it the f*** out. Kendrick is absolutely the best right now but this nigga himself would never say something like this that completely downplays the artistry of those that came before him. Like wtf lmao. Sounds like something a white man would say
they were playin the black panther soundtrack at the mall today, threw me for a loop when i went into the restroom hearin kendrick
