    back 2 black

i can agree with the 2 heavy sentiment, it is pretty dense

not sure about not being worth the wait, kendrick doesn’t strike me as the type of artist 2 be working on an album over the span of 5 years, regardless it’s still better than most rappers best albums lol

i think in a year or 2 people will look back on it & appreciate it more jus like they did with damn

Damn received immediate love though. It had enough lyrical content to hook in music nerds and enough hits to please the casuals. He struck the perfect balance but Mr. Morale leans too far left and it’s not as accessible. Even when it tries to be with a few mainstream attempts but they come across as contrived and formulaic. They gave a “Ok. We need 3 songs for radio. Here, here and here.” vibe.

damn yeh i don’t agree at all lol

i think u should listen 2 this album again, it really reminds me a lot of damn with it being it’s own thing at the same time

it’s just a notch below damn 4 me but i will agree it’s my least favorite album by him if i were 2 rank his discography

I find it interesting that people find an album with N95, Die Hard, Father Time, Rich Spirit, Purple Hearts, Count Me Out, Silent Hill, Savior, and Mr Morale inaccessible. I legit think at least half this album is very accessible. Sonically, I think Mr Morale is more accessible than TPAB.

Unless people are referring to the accessibility of the content? Cause I get it’s incredibly personal and at times uncomfortably confessional. But sound wise I kinda fail to see it being that out there

I don't think formulaic is the right word. The lyrical content on the hits match the content on the rest of the songs, and they can be super catchy. They do kinda stick out sonically though. That's probably the biggest difference between this and Damn in that regard. But I guess that's how its going to be when most of this album is using somber pianos and classical like strings lol. It seems hard to strike a balance between that kind of sound and the sound of more modern rap but I think Kendrick did a pretty good job

The longer I sit with Mr Morale the harder and harder it becomes to rank Kendricks discography. If someone told me that 5 years from now this was going to be my favorite Kendrick album ever, I wouldn’t be all that surprised.

Are we talking ktt or elsewhere? Because DAMN was praised on arrival.

No it wasn’t. When DAMN. Dropped people were mad it wasn’t TPAB II. They were saying it’s mainstream and Kendrick was chasing mainstream records. Remember people saying it didn’t deserve the Pulitzer.

Go look at the reactions to DAMN on YouTube. Almost all of them accused Kendrick of going commercial. As a matter fact they still hold that sentiment.

TPAB was also not accepted right away. They claimed it was too boring and hard to understand for a mainstream album.

The Kendrick subreddit still underrates DAMN like crazy. I’ll never get the “he went commercial” argument. Commercial rap for the last 5 years has not been anything that sounds remotely like DAMN lol

Maybe it's just those that I followed, who are mostly casual, but I remember Twitter hyping it up and people online claiming there was a part two releasing shortly after titled "Nation". Idk the full history of ktt and DAMN, but from the looks of it DAMN was received favorably here too, for the most part.

Literally every Kendrick album since TPAB has been the same s***

TPAB and DAMN both got undeserved hate and then a couple years later they got the love they deserved all along

    MM&TBS will be no different
