Think you could argue KOD was his "artsy" attempt.

The ones that get inspired to create better music aren't in the mainstream. To be in the mainstream would mean your own way got you there. Why would Cole wanna change a formula that aint broken?

Also, streaming/the industry's killed the creatives. A career arc like Kendrick is 100% never happening again until the industry stops being so prehistoric. The fact the radio has a major say in what tops the charts is both impressive and depressing af.

Yeah I'm not really saying that they don't make artsy or competent stuff at all or anything, but I'm just saying it's weird how little competitiveness critical acclaim actually inspires elsewhere. I get what you're saying about the formula stuff but I dunno, artists like Cole are so successful they can afford to experiment and not have it hurt their career. If an artist like Cudi can drop something as absurd as Speeding Bullet and still have a lot of relevancy, then other artists with longevity in their careers like Cole can afford to experiment as well for sure. I get what you're saying about mainstream stuff though, which for the record is why I didn't try to say this about Drake, since I don't blame him for keeping his pop appeal since that's ultimately what he's trying to do and what lane he wants.

I agree though in terms of the last part of your post about the streaming stuff and industry career arc. I think thats separate though, I was mainly talking about artists who have already broken through

This is his best album, I am confident enough to say that. This is GKMC, TPAB, and DAMN all brought together and evolved into present Kendrick. Crown is one of the best songs this man has made.

Because they were all on similar levels at one point in their careers. Drake did Take Care, Cole did Sideline Story, Kendrick did Good Kid. They all were officially on at that point. Then Cole did Born Sinner and Drake did Nothing Was The Same which took them into an even higher stratosphere cause those albums made them niggas officially mainstream.
Kendrick had to either decide to go the route they are going (Control) or set himself apart with TPAB. Jay-Z advised to go the other route and now we are here. But just because Cole and Drake decided to continue making music that they know works (at a high quality), doesn’t mean they should be held any lower than Kendrick. They are all legends in their respective lane and that is why they get compared. Don’t let recency bias discredit the history
