this album is great but kinda draining to listen to. like some of the songs are too heavy for me to take on.

Because despite Kendrick repeatedly telling people he is not a savior and to not put him on a pedestal, they will always see him as morally superior to other rappers and featuring Kodak is a “betrayal” of that character.

Something I noticed recently is how every time Kendrick drops a new album, everyone appreciates the previous one more.

People did it with GKMC when TPAB dropped

People did it with with TPAB when DAMN dropped

People are doing it now with Mr. Morale & DAMN

This is the case with like every mainstream artist honestly

Ehh, I think it’s moreso that Kodak being on this album directly conflicts with and undermines some of the messages Kendrick is trying to convey on this project

I think it's just cause they've had longer to sit with the old one vs something new. It's familiar and comfortable vs unknown

This might be the only plausible breakdown of this album's meaning I've seen online

He also broke down the heart and the album cover mentioning things I've not seen anyone bring up yet

Ed Sheeran gave you a song to sing to hit on random white girls at the local bar but he is not your savior

    Especially with Kendrick though.

I think it’s pretty apparent with every mainstream artist, especially in rap. People do this heavily with Drake, Cole, Ye, Carti, Future, Tyler, etc.

When Cole dropped Off Season, I didn’t like KOD more or better and when Ye dropped DONDA finished, I knew immediately it was better then JIK.

    I guess it just depends.

Eh idk. This does happen all the time with most every big artist.

Back in 09 on relapse Eminem has a line where he says “every CD critics give a 3. Then 3 years later they’d go back and re-rate it. And call the slim shady lp ‘the greatest’ The Marshall mathers was ‘a classic’. The Eminem show was ‘fantastic’ but encore ‘just didn’t have the didn’t have the caliber to match it.’ I guess enough time just ain’t pass yet. A couple more years that s***’ll be Illmatic”
