Oblivion XI avoided twitter for the album for the first two days then I popped in and saw people killing kendrick for we cry together.
Because they thought the name drop of harvey and rkelly was him showing he was in support of them and his views in the song were actually his, when its pretty clear he was playing a role
I'm being hyperbolic, but just seems like a growing trend to try and condemn artists for creative decisions such as this or putting hard topics in their art, which just results in artists moving like drake and avoiding it completely. I know this has been a thing forever but just seems like people are being more dense when comes to understanding art sometimes.
Not to say artists are immune from criticism, but damn I wouldn't blame kendrick or cole for not wanting to talk social-politic issues in there songs anymore. And this is just the subject matter point, when its come to the sound of music that's another thing, people are less receptive to different things too and quick to kill artists for risks cause they saw someone else do it
Yo i'm glad you said this lol cuz it's wild how one can hear that bar and think it's support when mfs is deff being called abusive. I keep tryna tell folks depiction is not endorsement.
And trying to police art is weird as hell anyway and is gonna lead to a lot of bland s*** in the future

on the flip side, the discourse for those supporting is just mainly "it's unique", "not high replay, but the lyrics tho", "it's different", "it's art", "it's music with a message", "not like other rappers today"
it's a little bit maddening tbh. and the few that ppl do expand on it kinda carry a roc nation brunch vibe to them if im being honest
