The thing that I always weigh in artwork like this is the balance between the weight of the message and the weight of the controversy. I still stand by my take on this as a significantly better version of what Dave Chappelle attempted all told, but it feels like it weighed more on the controversial side than 100% necessary to make the point.
But then, that also seems like part of the point. It’s not supposed to be a neat take on the subject and we’re supposed to reflect and realize how many people have this perspective. That’s what keeps me in favor of the song: the empathy wins out over the controversy which is a feat given how hard he pushes the limit with those lyrics.

so they get the idea, it’s just not presented in the most fluffed up cool dude socially awesome acceptable waywhich is pretty much what kendrick is tryn to come to grips with and is maybe one of the main social criticisms he has on the album- that ppl care waaaaaaay too much about the sounding super cool and socially aware part even if what they’re saying is meaningless
