Knives Out
8.5/10
In a film landscape filled with Easter eggs, references, and painfully self-aware jokes it’s amazingly refreshing to see Knives Out not rely on any of that to keep the audience’s attention.
This is a fun mystery that perfectly executes it’s planting and payoff. Everything this film plants is eventually paid off in some way later on, giving meaning to every moment and character interaction.
There are no wasted or pointless scenes. It all builds to something. And considering that most of us in this section just finishing watching the final episode of a certain unnamed sci-fi trilogy that planted A LOT and paid off almost none of it in the end, Knives Out was a great reminder that it is actually satisfying to try to figure the mystery within story and see if you’re right or wrong at the conclusion without the filmmakers concocting an ending that doesn’t make any sense for the purpose of subverting the expectations of the audience and no other reason.
Great writing, great acting. Yeah, this was really good.
