Watched The Seventh Continent and Dogtooth last night (and that new Eddie Murphy earlier in the day.. procrastination at its finest. Dolemite was pretty enjoyable 7/10). That film pairing worked better than I was expecting. When you go to the wiki for Seventh Continent, its a shame (but maybe necessary) that the immediate summary spoils the film; I didn't KNOW the conclusion entering the film, but when the hints started to gel it was pretty terrifying. Haneke has succeeded, across four films now, in thoroughly leaving me totally f***ed up. I'd give this an 8, Piano Teacher is my favorite so far at a 9. Gotta see White Ribbon and Amour now.
Dogtooth, like Seventh Continent, was another boundary-pushing exploration of the family unit in a way. So, especially as the film is getting its gears rolling, its hard to say if this is supposed to be a dystopian future or a really perverse present - that's a great success on the film's part, I think. It was pretty cold, brutal in parts, funny as well - typical Lanthimos. A.O. Scott says that its hard to differentiate the examination vs. exercise in perversity that the film explores, and I think that's a thought worth keeping in mind as well. The film did seem empty of ideas at times, but I still ultimately was surprised with what I saw. Something like an 8.5
Both films can be potentially described as exploitative I think

Missing Link from Laika. Such a cute movie. Same studio that did Coraline and Kubo and the Two Strings. Their stop motion is so damn good. Would def recommend if you're into animated movies.
