@Soupvillain Fiona Apple - The Idler Wheel...

This has been such an important album to me. I have no idea how many times I've listened to it but it's an autumn and winter staple in my life. It's just so welcoming in its vulnerability. I feel like her introspection challenges the listener to reflect on their part in failed relationships and friendships and how you contributed to what went wrong with it.

The switch-up in sound from Extraordinary Machine to this is just unreal. I remember reading in some interview that she feels most attached to this album and FTBC. It's probably cause she had 150% creative control of them with no label f***ery after what went down with Extraordinary Machine. She started recording both of them in secret just so she could avoid the headaches.

Every Single Night is a quintessential Fiona track. She always nails it with her album openers and this one is hard not to keep on repeat for half an hour. I personally can't relate to it because I'm a pretty no thoughts, head empty person but it's such a beautifully written and produced song.

Daredevil and Valentine are my personal favourites off this album even though the tone of them is so wildly different. The lyrics are amazing.

    "Say I'm an airplane
And the gashes I got from my heartbreak
Make the slots and the flaps upon my wing
And I use them to give me a lift"

"I'm amorous but out of reach
A still life drawing of a peach"

I go back and forth on Jonathan. Sometimes I'm feeling that song, and then just as often it's my least favourite song on the album. Left Alone hits closest to home, personally. Like it's scary just how much. I love her piano-playing and the percussion on this one the most. Werewolf is a classic. Even if you don't like Fiona Apple, chances are you'll like this song. "Nothing wrong when a song ends in a minor keyyy." The playground audio on the track is funny and weird but I couldn't imagine the song without it.

Periphery is her saying "fuck the crowd, have a unique personality" and I'm always here for that. "All that loving must have lacking something if I got bored trying to figure you out." Imagine being on the receiving end of that line. Vicious

Regret and Anything We Want are examples of how much of a gifted writer she is. I think the singer-songwriter genre has a reputation for artist's forcing weak metaphors and passing dry anecdotes as profound writing but the stories she tells in her music always have a fresh perspective to me. She has a way of injecting so much emotion and life into tracks that no one else could copy.

I feel like Hot Knife is divisive between Idler Wheel listeners. You either love it or you hate it. I think it's a light and fun album closer. Her harmonies with Maude are fantastic

Charley Drayton and her killed the production for this but it's also kinda weird. He's credited for thigh slapping on Daredevil. There's bottle factory sounds on Jonathan, playground kids on Werewolf, scissors and a cup for Anything We Want

    My top 5 songs:
    1. Daredevil
    2. Valentine
    3. Periphery
    4. Every Single Night
    5. Hot Knife

    10/10

Daredevil and Valentine those are my faves too! Esp Valentine started liking that song even more this year.

And that "All that loving must have lacking something if I got bored trying to figure you out." line is one of the standouts on the album Fiona can be mean when she wants to lol

I'm gonna listen to your album today again and then post a review!

Finally got around to listening to this

i really liked it, but it's not anywhere near RAM.

To be completely honest i prefer Daft Punk with vocals on their tracks whether it be features or their own. I'd already heard One More Time, and HBFS is one of my favourite Daft Punk songs, everything else was new.

the first run of 4 songs is amazing and set my hopes extremely high, which is why i was kinda disappointed i guess

Yo you submitted the Gorillaz album. that was actually the first time I listened to the album in full. I had heard the singles but never really listened to it. I f*** with it a lot more than I thought I would. Really solid album and the features really did they thing. Especially Kelela, she killed Submission. might be my favorite joint off the project!

Clive Tanaka y su Orquesta — 'Pre-Sunrise Authority'

    @BD32

This is such a great rec I had no idea what to expect going into the album. The sound borrows from the softer rocks elements and some banging drum breaks to go with that.

The vocals bring such a soothing quality to the project! I liked the mellow vibe throughout, there some Ambient and Pop moments there which stood out very well.

Much of the album follows that pop melody but manages to spice it up often enough as to not appear one dimensional.

Faves: Beehives Betrayed; Unpretentious Beauty; Diamond Defense; Disposable Love

Fitting match up since my first nomination for this listening club was David Bowie – Heroes. It’s probably my fav album of his once we look past his “essentials” and drop down to the tier below. It’s a consistent & enjoyable listen front to back and while it doesn’t touch his best work (not a low bar) & seems pretty safe, it is a good comeback album and a solid addition to his discography. I personally prefer the first half or so to most of what comes after.

Favs: Where Are We Now?, Valentine’s Day, (You Will) Set The World On Fire

    8/10

Glad you liked it! Not the best comeback album by any means, but it's a nice laid-back album that has good memories of mine attached to it

You should check out his 2010 album. I think it's even better

idk who gave me aaliyah but shoutout to you.

idk if i would call this a comeback album or not but whatever. found this to be the lesser of all of her album, but is still pretty good overall, it did grow off of me very badly over time though. vocally though, it’s probably her best, though i’ll give one in a million the slighter edge, and nothings topping the r kelly writing in aanban. mb for the rushed review. 7.5/10
