The heavy green filter in the original is just a result of them f***ing up the first Blu-Ray transfer lol
the movie didn't look like that when it first came out

even the 4K release which was overseen by Bill Pope toned it way down, I saw a 35mm print in theaters and the 4K screenshots are much closer to how it actually looked

nah it actually goes back to the second DVD, so the first DVD release was similar to how it looked in theatres, then after the sequels came out they released that iconic trilogy boxset which was just the box with all the coding all over it

In the boxset the Wachowskis tweaked the color timing of the scenes set within the matrix in the first movie in order to match the green hues they introduced in the sequels

this color timing was then retained into the first Blu-ray release

DP Bill Pope did oversee the 4K UHD release, where he stripped much of the green out of the first movie in order to bring back a cooler look (although many argue it's also not accurate)

basically I guess it comes down to whether you want something accurate to how it originally appeared (and how the DP prefers it), or if you're cool with something revisionist as it reflects the vision of the writers/directors and their next two movies

I just like that we have the choice I guess

yeah actually you're right

I think the green tint works for the sequels because it highlights how Neo's perception of the Matrix has changed but I'm not a fan of it in the original

side note the 4K releases for the trilogy are really stunning, some of the best transfers out there

rewatched the first Matrix today and my excitement for the new movie is pretty much gone now. Not because I didn't like it but because I know for a fact that the new movie will not be able to match it's greatness.
