nah if I remember correctly there was supposed to be an anime adaptation that followed the manga more closely cuz you gotta remember Otomo was writing the manga and the movie at the same time so the plot points are different in each medium.

The movie barely touches on s*** like for instance in the manga Akira comes back while in the movie he's dead.

They don't touch on Kaneda's first GF before Kei. Or the fact that in the manga Tetsuo's GF lives longer and is eventually abused by him and what not etc.
