this doesn't have too much to do with your post but you used the word "nondescript" and i've been thinking lately about expectations on this album after NFR. she clearly had a LOT to say for whatever reason on that album and the scope was a little wider than it has been throughout her career (songs like the greatest and hope). these first two singles and the little bit she's said about the album so far don't necessarily seem like they're going for that same depth. it will be interesting to see what topics she dives into this time, and if they aren't as wide-reaching as NFR what the reaction will be.

people are going to inevitably compare it to nfr and if it doesn't hit the same marks they're gonna probably think it's lightweight, which is unfair, but we've seen it happen time after time. i don't care about any of that, as long as she commits herself to whatever theme / sound she's going for and don't half-ass it i'm happy
