The protagonist wants (blank). They need (blank).

There is a logical throughline from trauma to want. The want is an external-yet-internally-driven desire that traces back to a destructive self belief which ultimately stems from a traumatic experience. In Mad Max: Fury Road, Max experienced the trauma of being powerless in the face of his family’s death. This leads to Max’s belief that he let his family die, thus his desire to not matter to anyone - and his want to seek isolation. Therefore, Max needs to allow himself to matter to someone. The need is the positive opposite of the negative internal desire.

Trauma > belief > internal desire > external want > need (opposite of internal desire)

This want and need clashes with itself and others because (blank). The clash changes the protagonist by (blank).

The want and need have the inherent capacity to clash due to their opposing nature, and the story brings this clash to fruition. In the protagonist’s attempts to stay on course to their want, they are interrupted by supporting characters whose own journeys force the protagonist to take actions that bring them closer to their need. Of course, the protagonist will push back against these interruptions in overt and subtle ways. But the challenges of the surrounding world give the protagonist no choice but to act in accordance with the supporting characters; the alternative being death. Max’s want for isolation is challenged by encountering Furiosa and the Wives, to which he acts standoffish and inconsiderate. He must become allies with Furiosa and the Wives in order to survive, and in this alliance, Max gets closer to his need of allowing himself to matter to someone.

That’s just a condensed self made writing based off what I’ve learned throughout the years by watching/reading lessons and watching films

Hope everyone has/had a good writing session today! Start the new year strong.

Even if you don’t have any current ideas to work on you can do a writing prompt just to make sure you’re sharpening ya tools daily.

Yo, is anyone interested in starting a weekly KTT screenwriting class? It’d just be an opportunity to share new pages of our work and get feedback from everyone. I think that is the best resource you can have as a screenwriter. A. It holds you accountable. B. You get the opportunity to see outside your own point of view. We can set a date. Just start with three to five pages. Whatchu guys think?
