Smacked VoodooMost likely because there were tracks on AWT that were floating around the internet for years prior to that dropping. Of course the inclusion of Shiny Suit Theory also gives your idea some validity.
I think AWT was Jay Electronica and Roc Nation meeting him half way. He wanted to release an album how he wanted, and the label wanted him to get some mainstream appeal. The conclusion they came to was Jay Electronica making something of a collab album with Jay Z.
I still like AWT for what it is and had it as one of my favorite hip-hop releases this year, but I definitely understood why people were disappointed. Not enough for people to be calling it trash because it's far from it.
The only older song on AWT is SST, the rest is from 2019 and this year.
But you're explanation sounds about right, they were figuring out over the years on how to put out a Jay album. It's still a shame Act 2 got scrapped for this

Then jay moved on.I guess “the blinding” could be seen as a “marketable” song they made him make. Production on it sounds a bit dated too, I wonder if it was ever intended for Act II

This seems like a demo he turned in to roc, probably finished and made tweaks after
honestly personally don't care and I still prefer AWT (sans better in intune which is jay's best song imo). I just think people are justified for expecting more from an album that a weasel misrepresented by omission in order to widen his profit margin.
