How long do y’all think this’ll last? The ramifications of essentially stopping trade with China are hard to even wrap the mind around.

How long they last won’t matter atp I don’t think

He could call them off right now and I still think China would hesitate or outright refuse to negotiate.

Tariff Policy Commission of the State Council Issues Announcement on Adjusting Tariff Measures on Imports Originating from the United States
April 11, 2025 | Source: Office of the Tariff Policy Commission of the State Council

On April 10, 2025, the U.S. government announced a further increase in “reciprocal tariffs” on Chinese goods exported to the United States, raising the rate to 125%. The U.S. side’s arbitrary imposition of excessively high tariffs on China seriously violates international economic and trade rules, disregards the global economic order it helped build after World War II, and contradicts basic economic principles and common sense. It is purely an act of unilateral bullying and coercion. China strongly condemns this.

In accordance with the Customs Law of the People’s Republic of China, the Foreign Trade Law of the People’s Republic of China, and other relevant laws, regulations, and basic principles of international law, and with the approval of the State Council, the Tariff Policy Commission of the State Council has issued an announcement:
Effective April 12, 2025, the additional tariff rate specified in the Announcement on Adjusting Additional Tariff Measures on Imports Originating from the United States (Tariff Commission Announcement No. 5 of 2025) will be raised from 84% to 125%. Other matters will continue to be handled in accordance with the Announcement on Imposing Additional Tariffs on Imports Originating from the United States (Tariff Commission Announcement No. 4 of 2025).

Even if the U.S. continues to raise tariffs further, it will be economically meaningless and will become a laughingstock in the history of the world economy. At the current tariff level, U.S. goods exported to China no longer have any market viability. If the U.S. continues to play a numbers game with tariffs, China will not respond. However, if the U.S. insists on substantively harming China’s interests, China will firmly retaliate and accompany the fight to the end.

Here’s the press release from the Chinese gov. Bully mentioned

the ramifications were already happening. china has been competing with countries like bangladesh, india, and vietnam to stay manufacturing dominant and "nearshoring" has been all the rage since COVID increased the cost of global shipping. the red sea blockade didn't help the situation. everything thats happening now gotta be seen in this context, the focus on trump as some sort of megalomaniac who's actions are random is unhelpful media slop.

His approval ratings have dropped a lot over the last week

I’ll be curious to see where things are at next week — I would expect them to take a huge nosedive over the course of the next few days

Obviously he’ll always have his lunatic base, but I think it’s definitely already at the point where the swing voters are back to viewing him negatively

He will cave by the end of next Friday or we will lose reserve currency status this year.
