I’m not into economics like that
Can anyone help me understand what’s happening?

Donald Trump, the president of the USA, imposed tariffs (tax on imported goods) on a bunch of countries.

It started with key allies like Canada and Mexico.

He then said he's going to tariff everyone and if they also increase their tariffs, he will respond with retaliatory tariffs.

Trump followed through with this and imposed tariffs on a bunch of countries on April 2 (Liberation Day).

After he did this, the market fell. Then China responded by raising their tariffs to 34% (April 4) and the market crashed.

Here we are now (April 7), this crash is now global as a bunch of other markets in the world have dropped sharply.

The US stock market has officially entered bear market territory (20% drop).

Things will also start becoming even more expensive for every day Americans.

Right now, the smaller countries have reached out to Trump to negotiate but countries like China have stood their ground.

Let me know if you have any other questions about what's happening right now.

Thank you so much, this helped a lot

What is the proposed reason for him doing this? What’s the goal here?

the basic laws of capitalism fly in the face of "small business" logic. competition leads to a centralization of capital meaning that over a long enough period of time larger businesses will eat smaller ones. no amount of regulation can prevent this because you live in a bourgeois dictatorship and those with more capital have more power.

The very first article he posted was about small businesses as a means of anti monopolization which no one has argued for
