"This is entirely a reaction to the fact that the empire has been dismantling itself since 2008. The constant money printing and deficit-fueled import economy can't last forever. Look how, macroeconomically, it has only benefited China which has seen historically unprecedented progress since 2008 due to its ability to command the economy in a rational manner thanks to the control of the CPC. The US can no longer wait for the much fantasized moment of China collapsing due to the encroachment of the types of capital that "reform an opening up" allowed.

So either the US has to do something now, even if it is temporarily disruptive, and try to save the empire or keep the status quo and fade away in the face of a rising China. It chose the former. Trump is no more dismantling the empire than Nixon was when he blew up the Bretton Woods system. There is a plan; It has been written about by advisors of Trump in economic white papers and such... but the issue is both Trump and the democrats benefit from this all being presented as some capricious decision originating from the individual mind of Trump. Trump benefits because he gets to take credit for it, the genius mastermind confronting the world that is taking advantage of the USD; Democrats benefit because presenting it as such precludes any discussion about actual economic policy. Dems don't want people to think economic policy is something that can be debated and changed/directed but rather something "natural" - Trump is the unnatural scapegoat."

California apparently plans on negotiating with countries independently in order to avoid some of the impacts of the tariffs.

    So much winning

Stellantis has “paused production” at some of its Canadian and Mexican auto assembly plants due to the newly announced tariffs — and as a result, some US workers will also be temporarily laid off.
Among those to be laid off are 900 US hourly employees who make powertrains and stampings that supply the affected Canadian and Mexican plants, Stellantis said Thursday. The temporary layoffs are due to reduced production prompted by the tariffs.
