I get what you’re saying. The irony is him accidentally becoming the big hero after being this increasingly violent degenerate for the whole film.
I just think it treads a dangerous territory by allowing him to be “the hero who broke up the s***ring, was applauded by the world, and got the girl”, especially in the context of modern times where we see a repeating story of alt right 4chan losers turned mass shooters. Bickle’s story is a wet dream for those kind of people, right? Like to a tee, he’s everything they want to be and gets everything they dream of — and those type of folk pose a much bigger threat than they did in the 70s.
Edit: I’m conflicted lmao. The alternative is to have Bickle lose in the end, which makes the story a bit more generic. The subversion of expectations is sort of the point.

He didn’t actually get the girl though, and the ending suggests that nothing actually changed in terms of himself as a person.
He’s still the agitated paranoid he was before.
The film was also a vehicle for the writer, Paul Schrader, obviously a heavy dramatization taken to an extreme, but it’s not a cold, outside a***ysis of this individual.
Suggesting the ending when viewed through the lens of today should be seen as an indictment on the film itself is an absurd notion anyway. If anything, it’s a further indictment of contemporary society that a person like this is seemingly so much more common and nothing is being done to alleviate that.
Scorsese himself is aware of this and brings it up right here.

Argument doesn’t even make any sense because what mass shooter who decides to target a school, or a department store, thinks they’ll come out the other end being celebrated as a hero in the mainstream?

Now he looks like Porky Pig.
Also, I have my doubts that he was inspired by Taxi Driver. Again, an indictment on society, not at all on the movie. Proof of the movie’s truth in some regards, if anything.
That just solidifies the movie as being been more culturally relevant today than it was back in ‘76.
