I categorize the Answer thing as a different thing from his “trolling”. It’s a difference between trolling and pandering. Plus he didn’t admit to Answer being a lie until Cherry bomb era iirc
He always says how he has everything planned out right? I feel like he knew after cherry bomb it was do or die and he devised this whole new persona for himself in detail to cater to audiences and get hot again. And it worked. But I don’t really think it’s any more genuine than what he was doing before.
I think a lot of sonic elements on Flower Boy were devised to be more accessible and get him back in good graces, and he even says something to that effect in the IGOR interview with Rick Rubin, but I always got the impression that those were his real feelings fueling the music.
Like, after Cherry Bomb was so hated it almost makes sense that the next major track we hear is literally him wondering if anyone would miss him if he disappeared
