HimotheeI hear what you're saying but I honestly disagree. I think Drake is at the disadvantage here.
If Kendrick loses, I think his reputation will largely remain in tact. He's got a cult like fanbase, Drake haters, and “real” hiphopheads backing him up.
Drake isn't afforded the same benefit. Push Ups was a solid diss, yet you’ve got people on Twitter talking about “Kendrick!! Call him a pedophile on wax and I’m all yours!!” A lot of people just want to see him lose.
If Drake loses, as in, if Kendrick drops a nuke on him that he can't recover from. That’s it. It’s ggs. I’m not saying his careers over at all but his credibility in rap will be cooked. He can't take another Adidon.
Think about Cole. His reputation is in the dirt now, and he was generally beloved or at least well liked among the general public before all this. Now he's a punchline. I haven't seen a rapper's reputation get tarnished so fast since Chance.
This goes to show the stakes are a lot higher. Drake isn’t beefing with someone like Pusha T or Meek, rappers who are arguably lower on the food chain when it comes to strictly popularity. He's beefing with someone on equal footing in terms of critical acclaim and popularity.
We’re talking big 3. Legacy s*** right here. This moment we talking bout will be the climax in the documentary being aired 30 years from now.
Again if Kendrick loses he still has GKMC and TPAB as feathers in his cap. It’ll be a blemish for sure but most people, me included, will be willing to make excuses for him and say he’s never been battle tested before to explain why he lost.
I have somewhat similar opinion. I think Drake easily has more at stake as his hip hop community respect has been getting attacked and hammered down. A loss to Kendrick might mean all of it’s gone. I don’t think Drake is gonna get any notable amount of respect from winning unless it’s some crazy diss that wins it all. I think if he wins, he’ll get put on the undisputed top in the game (at least amongst the post 2010s hip hop artist), but with some reluctance regardless. Drake would also regain some of the respect he lost after Pusha beef, but he’d still have the ghostwriting thing above his head.
Kendrick on the other hand: if he loses, people will be disappointed but again, immediately just go “Kendrick’s albums are better who cares about losing a beef?”. Another set would flat out refuses to recognize Drake winning in any capacity, but those would most likely be Stans. If Kendrick wins, he gets more respect again as hip hops chosen hero, but everyone expects him to win and wants him to clown Drake. It would be a “obviously he won!” Situation. It’s also important to emphasize that for some fans, this isn’t about finding out who is the top of the big 3, it’s about Kendrick embarrassing Drake and Cole and the fans getting to laugh at them.
Also, anything short of Drake winning by a landslide would have Kendrick still winning up. Which I mean, if Kendrick scores a 89, and Drake scores a 95, Kendrick will still be hailed a winner because it’s close and bias amongst the community will win over.
