This is the core issue of their clash. Neither of them respect the other as valid forms of hip hop. For example there's the purists who shut their ears and go lalala and say Kendrick is the last bastion of hip hop when hip hop has been wider than just pure rap for a long time now. The issue is not understanding that people have different goals, target audiences and missions in mind when creating music. They're both very much immature in this regard. I think that's what Cole was trying to do with the "Big 3" narrative.
